Ever wondered what it’d be like to smell the same as a dancer? (You probably haven’t taken into account the amount of sweat they generate during any give performance.)

Nevertheless Mikhail Baryshnikov has given you your chance - you just need to be willing to shell out a bit of cash to get it. The dancer has his own perfume line. And as you can imagine most of it is for women. (Do any men wear perfume?)

How much it’ll cost and how much you get is up to you, though an average bottle of his stuff costs around $10 or so. Again, it depends how big of a bottle you’re getting, and how extravagant you want to smell. Some portions can cost as much as $40 if you want to be ritzy.

Either way, it’s pretty popular stuff, and should be available at most perfume stores. (And, yes, there’s a cologne version for men who actually want to smell like Baryshnikov himself.)

It’s only natural that a star of Mikhail Baryshnikov would have a few relationships over the years. And, every now and then, those relationships bore fruit (so to speak), resulting in children for the Russian ballet star.

In Baryshnikov’s case there are four children. The first, born in 1981, is daughter Aleksandra Baryshnikov. She was the result of Baryshnikov’s relationship with actress Jessica Lange, who helped him with his English. The two have since broken up, however.

Instead Baryshnikov has found a dancer with whom he shares his heart, Lisa Rinehart. Having engaged in a long-term relationship for several years now, the two have had three kids: Peter, Anna and Sofia. They aren’t likely to marry, however, as Baryshnikov doesn’t hold with legal marriage providing the bind that emotions alone should.

Or something like that.

White Nights is a 1985 film directed by Taylor Hackford and starring Mikhail Baryshnikov, Gregory Hines and several other prominent actors and actresses.

Baryshnikov plays a Soviet ballet dancer who had previously defected to the west. He meets Hines’ character, a fellow tap dancer (albeit from the United States) who wants to defect, but in the opposite direction. They experience a bit of friction because of the opposite sides.

But when Baryshnikov is forced to land in Siberia and he’s recognized, the two dancers are immediately captured and their skills put to use by the Soviets. Captured together they soon become friends and confidants, and Hines works hard to help Baryshnikov leave the country he so desperately wants to escape. And, in the end, Baryshnikov does indeed get away.

The entire movie was shot in Finland despite most of it being set in the Soviet Union.

Generally when you think of Mikhail Baryshnikov you think of dancing. But he’s also an accomplished actor (there’s usually at least some kind of story behind ballet, after all) and, surprisingly enough, he made a fairly major appearance in the televsion hit Sex and the City.

In it Baryshnikov plays Aleksandr Petrovsky, an older, succesful Russian artist. He woos and wins Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and she enjoys spending time with him; however the fact that he’s already had several children and doesn’t want more daunts her. Nevertheless she stays with him, outweighing her need for children and commitment with her affection for Petrovsky.

But thigns don’t last. Petrovsky asks Carrie to come with him to Paris. She agrees after some hard thought but finds herself disoriented upon arrival. Not only can she not speak French, Petrovsky leaves often to deal with his own career. Invariably Carrie leaves Petrovsky for her real love, “Mr. Big”, and returns with him to New York. This return marks the end of the series.

Baryshnikov’s unique take on the Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet has become a staple of television programming during the Christmas season. The Nutcracker was Baryshnikov’s first exposure to audiences outside of traditional ballet enthusiasts. Mikhail Baryshnikov choreographed both the stage, and television versions of The Nutcracker.

He made some changes to Tchaikovsky’s original, cutting characters such as the Sugar Plum Fairy from the show completely. Still, Mikhail Baryshnikov’s The Nutcracker remains the most popular rendition of the classic ballet to date. The 2004 re-issue of the television taping remains the best-selling home video version of The Nutcracker, and the show is still aired on PBS stations every year. The Nutcracker was nominated for an Emmy award, but did not win. Mikhail Baryshnikov has since expaned his career to include film and television work, most notably as Alexandr Petrovsky on the HBO series Sex and the City.

The Hell’s Kitchen Dancers are a young dance ensemble that hail from the Baryshnikov Arts Center. Mikhail Baryshnikov founded his Baryshnikov Arts center in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City, with the intention of creating a place to serve talented young perfomers.

All the dancers in the Hell’s Kitchen troupe have recieved fellowships from the Baryshnikov arts center. Mostly consisting of Juilliard-trained dancers, the group has toured both the U.S. and Spain. Baryshnikov, himself a legendary ballet dancer, sometimes performs with the group as well. The dancers’ virtuosic performances garnered a rave review from the New York Times, who said “A first performance by Hell’s Kitchen Dance… suggests that [Baryshnikov’s] vision may have a great deal of staying power.

Hell’s Kitchen Dance have closed out their 2007 tour, and have yet to announce any performances for 2008. But will probably soon be performing at the Barishnykov Arts Center.
